Equinix cools 45 metros around the world with direct-to-chip liquid cooling technology

Equinix just proved that it really is “Cool to be Cool” with the announcement that it will expand support for advanced liquid cooling technologies to more than 100 of its International Business Exchange® (IBX®) data centers in more than 45 metros around the globe. This expansion will enable more businesses to use the most performant cooling technologies for the powerful, high-density hardware that supports compute-intensive workloads such as artificial intelligence (AI).

As a long-term partner of Equinix, ZutaCore is thrilled to be part of this exciting expansion. Since early 2022, we have been partnering with Equinix at its Co-Innovation Facility and Equinix Metal deployments to help develop, operate, and test next generation of liquid cooling solutions at scale. We’re excited to see Equinix expand the number of liquid cooling enabled data centers as we continue to optimize customer workloads with waterless liquid cooling to drive towards a zero-emissions data industry.

 
HyperCooling Next Generation AI, ML and HPC Applications

Innovative cooling solutions such ZutaCore’s HyperCool are essential for data centers to keep up with the rapidly evolving world of computing, and they will be critical for supporting the next wave of digital infrastructure. HyperCool is a groundbreaking closed-loop system that operates at low pressure and moves large amounts of heat off the processors and away from the servers. The system can support up to 100kW per rack of computing power, delivering the highest sustained performance, server densification, and reduced power usage. Unlike other solutions, HyperCool requires no water in the system, which not only protects equipment from corrosion and other water-related threats, but also saves this valuable resource for long-term sustainability.

The ZutaCore HyperCool solution can be implemented in new or existing data centers and delivers 10 times more computing power, a 50% reduction in total cost of ownership, 100% heat reuse, and reduced CO2 emissions for a sustainable data center.

 
Deployments Taking Place in Some of the Largest Cities Globally

The 45 metros that Equinix will provide support for direct-to-chip liquid cooling include locations such as London, Silicon Valley, Singapore, and Washington D.C.  According to Tiffany Osias, Vice President of Global Colocation, Equinix, “Liquid cooling is revolutionizing how data centers cool powerful, high-density hardware that supports emerging technologies, and Equinix is at the heart of that innovation. We have been helping businesses with significant liquid-cooled deployments across a range of deployment sizes and densities for years. Equinix has the experience and expertise to help organizations innovate data center capacity to support the complex, modern IT deployments that applications like AI require.”

IDC also stressed the importance of liquid cooling technologies. Sean Graham Research Director, Cloud to Edge Datacenter Trends at IDC, stated “We have seen an increase in demand for data-intensive and high-compute applications like AI. The hardware required to run these new applications is pushing up densities inside data centers and can no longer be efficiently cooled by traditional techniques. We are seeing a growing demand for liquid-cooled solutions from enterprises, and it is essential that data center providers, like Equinix, can support this next generation of cooling solutions.”

What Equinix Learned from Deploying HyperCool

Equinix recently wrote a blog highlighting the lessons it learned from deploying and running HyperCool for critical workloads.  According to Equinix, they chose ZutaCore because “its two-phase data center liquid cooling system is a radically different design from single-phase liquid cooling designs. The latter are well established in the industry. There are single-phase products on the market from well-known players like CoolIT and upstarts like JetCool, as well as custom OEM solutions from IBM, Lenovo and HPE. Two-phase liquid cooling is a more recent data center market arrival, and we are excited by the magnitude of positive implications it carries for energy efficiency, power density and sustainability.”
